Consultation Events for People with
Learning Disabilities and Carers
The Joint Learning Disability Strategy
Review will be holding a number of meetings from June to August 2007. The aim
is to hear the views of as many people with learning disabilities and their
carers as possible, by providing the chance to question the experts face to
face and share ideas with other people.
The meeting about the future of day
services for
people with learning disabilities in the Lothians was held on 16th
June. It was well attended, lively, and gave a clear sense of direction to
the review (picture below).
The future of health services for
people with learning disabilities in the Lothians was the subject of
our next meeting on 21July at Leith Academy.

Why are we
having a review?
People with learning disabilities
told us:
"We
want
to be included
and be part of our communities.
Be at the
centre
of
decision making - take
control.
Have information
about services and real choices............
The chance to
get a job.....
Be
able to develop
fully
as individuals .........
Be better understood and supported by our
local community
Have a circle of
friends
and
enjoy our leisure time"
What
will the review do?
We
want to improve services for people with learning disabilities. The
Review Board was set up last autumn to help these changes happen. We will write a report to NHS Lothian with plans and
ideas for changes. They will read our report and then decide what to do.
Our group includes people with learning disabilities and their
advocates, doctors, staff, social workers, managers and family members.
Most of the work is being done by seven
working
groups. They all report to the Review Board.
