Kilsyth and area isn't exactly famous for its cuisine, and there is still scope for an enterprising chef to open something new and exciting here in the medium price bracket. But in the meantime, here are the....
1. Posh dining and big occasions.
The Glenskirlie wins this award again - they are in a league of their own, especially with their grand new extension.
2. Good value Sunday lunch or family- friendly evening meal.
The Stables with their charming setting on the canal between Kirkintilloch and Bishopriggs would be our next favourite choice but sadly that is slightly out of area for this guide as originally conceived. But there isn't much doubt that they attract a lot of loyal Kilsyth trade, so they win the award anyway.

3. Best local restaurant
On balance, the Kilsyth restaurant of the year for 2007 is the Gulistan - excellent service and delicious Asian cooking make this a popular and truly local choice.
4. Best local take-away
And for traditional take-away service, despite the new shiny Marinis by the Post Office, Angelos is definitely still the best. Their portions are generous and their food is fresh and delicious.
5. Overall winner
For a light lunch or a cup of tea or coffee in pleasant surroundings, good service, and excellent value for money, the overall award for best Kilsyth eaterie of the year goes to Cafe Refresh - below. Congratulations to Aileen and the team!

This is the IN place for serious foodies. Food is fantastic, service superb, probably one of the top country restaurants in Scotland and well worth re-mortgaging your house just to see that pudding trolley one more time before you die. Very popular with visiting Americans and the business sector, so the atmosphere can be a little quiet for my liking - unless you are lucky enough to be invited to a wedding, when it really rocks! Manages to be friendly and un-snobbish whilst giving great value for that special anniversary or business lunch. But I wouldn't take the kids, personally speaking - this is serious grown-up gourmet territory.

Market St, Kilsyth, G65 0BA Map Our critic said: Angelo's is close to fish supper heaven. Their delicious home-made pizzas also put most fancy Italian sit down joints to shame, at a fraction of the price. The fish is fresh, there is a great choice and you can even get a home delivery if you're one over the limit.

Kilsyth's well-established Tandoori restaurant is a popular favourite in a central location by the Market Square. Good choice of curries, and recently refurbished decor make this a good choice for a reasonably priced night out. |

| OO7 Snack Bar - licensed to grill - guaranteed to thrill! This ever popular al fresco mobile snack bar is usually found on an exclusive pitch at the lay-by at the entrance of the Colzium Lennox estate on the Stirling Road, and offers a wide range of high cholesterol, high satisfaction, bacon rolls, sliced sausage and similar traditional Scottish delicacies. Definitely a favourite with the hungry Banton Loch anglers and passing truckers, the no-frills approach to cuisine has many supporters. Our critic found the staff friendly and eager to please. Child and animal friendly, but the toilet facilities are rather draughty! RK |
