"A rounded view of this constituency (Cumbernauld and
Kilsyth) would suggest that it
has a lower than average proportion of older people in the population. Household
income in this constituency is close to the Scottish average and there is a
higher unemployment rate. All the health indicators are either better than or
very close to the Scottish average": PHIS

Cottage Hospital wins top marks
Kilsyth Victoria Memorial Cottage Hospital may be small in size but is clearly big on delivering a quality service. Following a rigorous independent evaluation of the service by the Cabinet Office, ‘Modernising Public Service Group’ the hospital has been awarded the prestigious Charter Mark Award for excellence. The winning team at Kilsyth were one of only 55 public sector organisations across Scotland who achieved the Award this year. Sister Margaret Brown who attended the Award ceremony in London’s QE II Conference Centre, said "We are very pleased to have gained recognition as providers of best practice. This success reflects out commitment to team work and partnership between hospital and community staff, the patients, their relatives and the local community."
To achieve Charter Mark the multi-professional staff had to demonstrate that they provide outstanding service which puts patients and the public first and that they are continually seeking ways to improve.
Recent developments include extensive refurbishment of the unit with the introduction of comprehensive nursing documentation, a new audio taped menu system for people who are visually impaired as well as the installation of a telephone audio aid for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Martin Hill, Chief Executive of Lanarkshire Primary Care NHS Trust said " We are delighted that the excellent service provided by the Kilsyth Victoria Cottage Hospital team has been recognised by winning Charter Mark at the first time of asking. The award winners have set a standard which we are committed to developing in other areas of the Trust.
Kilsyth Victoria Cottage Hospital had another visit from Charter Mark, the quality awards body, on the 25/07/2002. This went very well and they will be informed of the result of the visit by the first week in November
Katrina Purcell, Volunteers Co-ordinator with NHS Lanarkshire is currently co-ordinating activities around the centenary of the Cottage Hospital which takes place next year. "We recognise how important the cottage hospital is to the people of Kilsyth and therefore want to involve the community in not just the celebration of the centenary but also the planning of the year". Kilsyth Community Council supports the Stobhill hospital campaign
After years of campaigning to persuade the Greater Glasgow Health Board to retain the Stobhill Hospital, the Board have decided to recommend its closure. Also to close are the Western Infirmary and Victoria Infirmary.
Gartnavel is to be expanded to take over from the Western. On the south side of the city there will be only one hospital, though a decision on whether it will be an expanded Southern General or a new hospital on a greenfield site at Cowglen has not yet been made. Stobhill is to be replaced by a new "ambulatory care and diagnostic centre".
The total cost of the developments will be in the region of £700 million. The green light was also given for a new £50 million cancer unit at the Beatson Oncology Centre at Gartnavel Hospital.
We oppose these developments, as we believe that Stobhill offers a more accessible emergency and general hospital service than Monklands, and has better public transport links.
