What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese relaxation technique based on the channeling of ‘Chi’ energy (‘Chi’ is the same energy that an acupuncturist uses needles to encourage energy flow. Shiatsu massage uses finger pressure to move ‘Chi’ energy and Tai Chi/Chi Kung/QiGong marshal arts use graceful exercises to cultivate personal reserves of ‘Chi’). In Reiki the practitioner will channel extra energy into you to harmonise your energy system, putting your body in the best position to heal itself on all levels: physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

How will I be treated?

To be treated with Reiki energy you need to be in a relaxed position. The normal position would be laid on your back on a treatment couch. If it is more comfortable for you to lie face down (to have back problems treated for example) or to sit in a chair then that’s fine too. There is no need to remove clothing but it is better to not wear metal (i.e. belt buckles, watches etc). You will be covered with a blanket to keep you warm. Relaxing music is played and the treatment room at ‘Skyros’ is spacious and peaceful.

What does Reiki feel like?

Everyone’s experience of Reiki will be different but there are some common feelings:

Relaxation, sometimes very deep relaxation (often people fall asleep or drift in and out)
Heat from the practitioners hands (often around the head as if you are under a lamp)
Seeing colours (Blue, and violet/purple are quite common)
Floating or sinking (as if you are floating off the treatment table or sinking into it)
Tingling or heat sensations moving along the body
Disorientation (most commonly on rising from the treatment table)
Feeling cold (less common than feeling heat)
Emotional release (common on the 1^st treatment, perhaps the release of an emotional block)

Physical release (sometime physical pain intensifies during treatment and then eases subsequently. In most people Reiki ‘damps down’ physical pain)

Everyone is different, some people may only need a few energy treatments close together to get the benefit. For others it may be that you need to space out your treatments and have regular top – ups to get the best benefit.
